Centre for Nursing Research
http://www.jgh.ca/cnr
The mandate of the Centre for Nursing Research is to conduct and publicize the results of rigorous, peer reviewed, externally funded research directed towards the advancement of nursing practice. The Centre is also mandated to promote Evidence-based Practice throughout the Nursing Department. Core members of the Centre include: Margaret Purden N., PhD (Scientific Director); Carmen Loiselle N., PhD (Nurse Scientist); Nancy Feeley N., PhD (Nurse Scientist); Céline Gélinas N., PhD (Nurse Scientist); Marie Durand N., B.Sc.(N), (Research Coordinator) and Robin Canuel BA, MLIS (Librarian/Administrative Technician). Other professionals are employed according to their expertise and the needs of specific research projects. Nursing students also contribute to the Centre for Nursing Research as research assistants or in conducting their own projects.
Clinical Research Unit (CRU)
This Unit is well recognised for excellence in early phase cancer clinical research. Clinical trials are one of the final stages of a long and careful research process that tests new treatments such as a new drug, a new approach to surgery or radiation therapy, new combinations of treatments, or new methods such as gene therapy. Half of patients treated in early phase trials have been referred to the Unit from outside the Montreal area.
McGill Centre for Translation Research in Cancer
http://www.mctrc.org
This Unit focuses on cancer prevention by examining molecular aspects of cancer development and performing population-based studies to explore the causes of cancer as well as prevention strategies. The Unit is the lead site for a Canada-wide Breast Cancer program and is a key centre of a similar national network on prostate cancer. The Unit also has active programs in colorectal cancer and provides medical information to the public in an easily understood format. A strong Cancer Genetics Program is integrated.
Solidage Research Group on Integrated Services for Older Persons (McGill University -Université de Montréal)
http://www.solidage.ca
SOLIDAGE, the McGill University-Université de Montréal Research Group on Integrated Services for Older Persons is devoted to research, policy studies and practice development and training in the organization, management and care of the older population.
SOLIDAGE was formed in 1999 to broaden the collaboration of researchers on integrated services for the frail elderly. It is based at the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research, Jewish General Hospital, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
The Bloomfield Centre for Research in Aging (BCRA)
http://www.bloomfieldcentre.org/
The Bloomfield Centre for Research in Aging (BCRA) was founded in 1989 with a generous donation from Mrs. Neri Bloomfield and the Eldee Foundation. The BCRA was established to promote research into all aspects of aging, concentrating on cellular and molecular mechanisms of healthy aging and age-related diseases. The Centre occupies the fourth floor of the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research at the Sir Mortimer B. Davis - Jewish General Hospital, a teaching hospital of McGill University in Montreal. The BCRA is unique in Canada, a centre focused on aging and neurodegenerative diseases with expertise extending from molecular studies of the pathophysiology of disease, up to clinical and imaging studies of AD, population studies, and evaluation of health delivery systems for the elderly. Funding for research activities now comes from international organizations such as the NIH, NIA, Alzheimer’s Association (USA), the American Health Assistance Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, the Quebec FRSQ, and the Medical Research Council of Canada (now the Canadian Institutes for Health Research) along with private donations.

The Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Community Studies (CCECS)
http://www.jgh.ca
The Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Community Studies was founded in 1991 by Drs. Lucien Abenhaim and S.O. Freedman. Under the guidance of Dr. Lucien Abenhaim (Director from 1991 to 1999) the Centre has established itself as a leader in pharmacoepidemiology, randomized clinical trials, neuroepidemiology, health services research, cardiovascular epidemiology, epidemiology of thromboembolic disorders, geriatrics, and emergency medicine. Dr. Christina Wolfson was appointed the Centre's second director in December 1999. The Epidemiology Centre is composed of 8 research units, each of which pursues independent research and participates in collaborative research with clinicans and other health professionals in the hospital, the research institute and the larger scientific community. Many Centre members participate in the research activities of more than one Unit. A Consultation Service provides methodologic support to the clinical departments as well as to researchers in the LDI.
The McGill AIDS Centre
The McGill AIDS Centre coordinates, facilitates and promotes research, treatment and teaching activities relating to HIV infection and AIDS at McGill University and its affiliated hospitals. The Centre's offices are housed in the Lady Davis Institute at the Jewish General Hospital. Researchers at the LDI were instrumental in identifying the problem of HIV resistance to AZT and also helped to develop the anti-AIDS drug 3TC. They are researching immune responsiveness against HIV and control mechanisms involved in regulation of viral replication, and are involved in new drug discovery programs. Other activities at the McGill AIDS Centre include the cutting-edge clinical trials and studies on psychosocial needs and treatment of persons with HIV, underway at various sites of the McGill University Health Centre. At least 20 different projects in support of AIDS research at McGill are currently funded by a variety of granting agencies, and McGill staff are involved in teaching at each of the undergaduate, graduate and medical resident levels.
The Montreal Centre for Experimental Therapeutics in Cancer (MCETC)
http://www.mcetc.ca
The Montreal Centre for Experimental Therapeutics in Cancer (MCETC) Established in 2000 after receiving a $7.8 million grant from The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), the MCETC is the base of operations for a Quebec-wide network of researchers that includes a multidisciplinary and inter-university team of experts in cancer research from five Quebec universities and five other hospital-based and independent research institutes. The Centre functions as a meeting place for scientists who wish to see their laboratory research “translated” into clinical benefits for patients. The MCETC’s primary goals are: the creation of innovative cancer therapies, drugs and technologies; the development of a proactive, complimentary interface with biomedical and biotechnology industrial partners to further develop and commercialize discoveries; and the training of highly qualified research and clinical personnel.
The Terry Fox Molecular Oncology Group
Established with a large National Cancer Institute of Canada Terry Fox Establishment Grant, this group includes eight senior scientists and over two-dozen graduate students and post-doctoral fellows studying particular aspects of cancer cells with the hope of identifying new targets for therapy. A particular area of internationally recognized excellence is the translation of laboratory discoveries into clinically meaningful novel therapies.
