The LDI is very active and has a proven track record of success in clinical and evaluative research. A recent survey conducted in our institution indicated that over 70 researchers are involved primarily in clinical and evaluative research activities, spanning a broad range of departments, disciplines and research methodologies. The majority of these investigators are also engaged in clinical activities, thereby promoting rapid translation of research findings directly to the care of patients. On average, 60% of projects are funded via peer-reviewed grants; the remainder receive funding from pharmaceutical contracts, investigator-initiated contracts or other sources. Many investigators have peer-review salary awards or Research Chairs to support their clinical and evaluative research programs.

In recognition of the importance of clinical research, there has been a move in the last year to increase promotion of clinical research at the Jewish General Hospital, to foster links between clinicians and researchers, to mentor physicians and other health professionals interested in clinical research and to encourage cross disciplinary clinical research initiatives.

In 2005, Dr. Susan Kahn was named Associate Director for Clinical Research, reporting to the Director of Research. Dr. Kahn is a member of the Research Management Committee and chairs the Dry Lab Space Committee and the Clinical Research Committee. She is responsible for oversight of clinical and evaluative research conducted at the Sir Mortimer B. Davis Jewish General Hospital and the Lady Davis Institute. She maintains a close liaison with the JGH Research Ethics Office.Goals for the coming year include improving collaboration and statistical and methodological consultation between clinical research investigators and the JGH Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Community Studies, a tremendous resource within our institution, and working with the Director of Research to plan and oversee an annual research day that will highlight the work of established and emerging clinical and evaluative researchers and research students.
