Axe 1 –HIV/AIDS
HIV / AIDS
This group is very productive: research results were already presented into more than 65 international congress and more than 205 scientific papers were published. A lot of collaboration occurs between the different laboratories associated with this group. Researchers of this axis are well funded.
Axe 2 –Aging
Theme A: Cognitive Neurosciences and Alzheimer's Disease
Theme B: Molecular and Cellular Biology of Aging
Dr. Howard Chertkow, a world renowned researcher in the area of imagery and links between imagery, psychiatry, and neurology, is the leader of the cognitive neuroscience and Alzheimer's disease theme. Dr. Howard Bergman is an expert in the area of aging also associated with this theme. He was appointed Director of the FRSQ Quebec Research Network on Aging. Dr. Andrea Leblanc is well-known as an expert in the area of prions and prion associated diseases, and the Director of our research group in the area of molecular and cellular biology of aging. These researchers also presented their research results in approximately 50 scientific meetings over the last few years, and published more than 135 scientific papers.
Axe 3 –Cancer
Theme A: Molecular Oncology
Theme B: Cancer Pharmacology
Both themes Molecular Oncology and Cancer Pharmacology are grouped in the integrated Segal Cancer Centre which is a world-class facility for both cancer research and cancer treatment. The Centre encompasses the basic research facilities of the Terry Fox Molecular Oncology Group, the translational research facilities of the Montreal Centre for Experimental Therapies in Cancer and the Clinical Research Unit. The mission statement of the Segal Cancer Centre is provide the best cancer care to patients using an interdisciplinary team approach to ensure that new experimental therapies discovered by basic and clinical scientists are available to the cancer patients of Québec and Canada in a safe and timely manner.
Axe 4 –Hemovascular Medicine
Theme A: Cardiovascular Diseases
Theme B: Blood Disorders
The Hemovascular diseases axe comprises research on the cardiovascular system and the blood, and interactions between both. This axe is lead by Dr. Ernesto Schiffrin, who is also the Physician-in-Chief of the Jewish General Hospital, recipient of a Canada Research Chair and who directs the Hypertension and Vascular Research Unit of the LDI and the Cardiovascular Prevention Center of the Hospital, and is an expert in the field of Hypertension and vascular disease. Members of this axe are Dr. David Langleben, Chief of Cardiology of the Hospital, who is an expert in pulmonary hypertension, Dr. Jacques Galipeau, hematologist, who has developed cutting edge-expertise in human stem cell research and genetic engineering of endothelial cells, Dr. Prem Ponka, who is internationally renowned in the field of oxidative stress in relation to iron, Dr. Lorraine Chalifour, Dr. Kostas Pantopoulos and Dr. Mark Blostein. Research of all these investigators is funded either by CIHR, other funding agencies and/or the pharmaceutical industry. Details of the research carried out by the different investigators can be found in the Hemovascular A and B webpages.
Axe 5 –Epidemiology and Public Health
Theme A: Clinical Epidemiology
Theme B: Health Services Research
This group is under the leadership Dr. Susan Kahn (Director) also Director of Clinical Research at the Hospital. Another research theme focuses on health services and is leaded by Dr. Jean-François Boivin. The majority of the Axis 5 members base all or part of their research activities at the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Community Studies (CCECS). Researchers at the CCECS conduct research at the local, national and international levels. The CCECS houses research programs in neurological diseases, thromboembolic disorders, cardiovascular health, psychiatry, pharmacoepidemiology, health services research, cancer, as well as research targetted at improving the design and analysis of clinical and epidemiological studies. The CCECS also provides a consultation service to clinician researchers within the hospital for advice on study planning, design, analysis, interpretation and presentation.
Axe 6 –Psychosocial Aspects of Disease
Psychosocial Aspects of Diseases
This axis is comprised of researchers from psychiatry, psychology, anthropology, and nursing, who apply wide-ranging expertise and diverse methodologies to the study of psychosocial factors that contribute to health and illness. Situated in the heart of Montreal's most ethnically and culturally diverse neigbourhood, the Jewish General Hospital has taken a leadership role in studying how individual differences in values, beliefs, and behaviors influence symptom expression, help-seeking, diagnosis and response to treatment. Our research program is innovative in its application of insights and methods from the social sciences to address key issues in medicine and psychiatry. Qualitative techniques such as narrative and discourse analysis are combined with quantitative methods such as epidemiological surveys and longitudinal studies to identify the impact of psychological, social and cultural factors in the etiology, course, and treatment of physical and mental illness.
